A special addition to our event will be the Governors Highway Safety Program Expo Display. The EXPO which travels the state educating the citizens of North Carolina on the importance of not drinking and driving. The driving simulators allow a driver to witness first hand how alcohol impairs your judgment while driving.

The 53 foot custom built trailer includes seven interactive driving simulators and offers 30 different lessons with over 240 driving scenarios. Each lesson is available in English, Spanish and French. The simulators include 3-dimensional graphics that provide true-to-life images.

These funds are once again one time awards and will be used to expand and enhance the current SPF-SIG Project: Connect the Dots Peer Led (High School) Public Service Campaign to include the middle school population. Middle school students will be invited to participate in and produce public service announcements and increase the distribution of Project: Connect The Dots Audio and Video products.

Remaining funding in this line item will allow the purchase of a computerized Classroom Performance System distributed by eInstruction Companies (www.einstruction.com and as displayed during the Prevention Track at the Winter NCFADS Session) to support interactive programming and survey collection during SPF-SIG prom and graduation activities as well as support the data collection. Unlimited Success Staff time will also be included to aid in survey design, creation and evaluation.

An expansion of the Project: Connect the Dots website will occur to display the anti-alcohol posters, artwork and other activities of our new middle school underage age drinking prevention effort.

Underage alcohol usage and low perceived risks of youth associated with underage drinking was a primary issue as outlined in Surry County SPF-SIG Documentation. To supplement current Surry SPF-SIG peer led interventions for the underage population, additional funds will be used to sponsor middle school based alcohol prevention efforts. Specifically a youth advocacy and speakers bureau will be pilot tested at one Surry County Middle School. Students will lead an anti-alcohol campaign as well as speak to 5th graders about the dangers or alcohol use. Two sponsors will be retained to help coordinate school activities during the spring semester and summer months. Anti-Alcohol Poster contests as well as other evidenced based activities will be facilitated to provide appropriate knowledge to the underage population. Additional Unlimited Success Staff funds will also be included in or to facilitate our new underage drinking effort in the fastest and most efficient way possible.

Use of the Domino Strategy will also be expanded to reach greater numbers of the community that the project would have before been unable to due to budget limitations and ensure even tighter integration with the Project: Connect the Dots Documentary and Public Service Announcement effort.

The Surry County CAP also requested funds to support CAP and community trainings based on effective prevention principals. Expansion funds will allow the Surry County Community Advisory Panel (CAP) to bring the concept of alcohol abuse prevention efforts for the adult and youth populations into focus with a sustainable grassroots organizational effort. A sub-committee (of the CAP) tasked with the design, development and implementation of formal alcohol and other drug prevention coalition has already met, (per the Surry County Implementation Plan) with plans to review current prevention and treatment options within Surry County and to design and implement a sustainable and independent coalition. Expansion funds will be used to provide formal coalition building training to interested community members via the CADCA Training Center.

SPF-SIG funds were also approved to provide local transportation and coordination funding for Surry County youth and adults who are involved in local coalition building efforts to participate in already approved regional sports related prevention efforts coordinated by Partnership for a Drug Free NC.

This page contains facts, figures and comments taken from the Surry County Community Needs Assessment related to impaired driving within Surry County.

Topics included the history of the Surry SPF-SIG effort, needs assessment information and the two fold purpose of the Community Mobilization Sub-Committee. The committee will investigate possible opportunities to build a stand along organization that will serve as a coalition for alcohol and drug abuse prevention in Surry County.

The second goal of the committee will be to evaluate current substance abuse prevention and treatment offerings within Surry County and create a ‘binder’ of information that is readily and easily accessible to the community. Basically, members hope to expand upon the Surry County Needs Assessment (Published March, 2007) and compile base line data to assist in program research and evaluation purposes.

Project staff are also reviewing the final drafts of our first electronic newsletter.  The newsletter will be arriving in mailboxes of the community in the coming week.   The beta site of www.projectconnectthedots.info was also launched this week and undergoing changes daily.  Public comments and suggestions are  welcome!
